MDF Upgrade & Jumpering
Sydney

Many apartment and unit internet or phone faults trace back to the building's Main Distribution Frame (MDF), not your own wiring. We access the comms room, diagnose the fault, and jumper your unit's service correctly.

Our Scope of Work

What an MDF Upgrade Actually Involves

The Main Distribution Frame (MDF) is the point where a building's internal cabling connects to the external telecommunications network — usually located in a shared comms room. A large share of "unexplained" apartment internet and phone faults actually originate here, not inside the unit itself.

We access the MDF (with the building manager or strata's permission), identify how your unit's service is jumpered, and correct faults such as incorrect jumpering, damaged legacy connection blocks, or cross-talk between units — problems no amount of testing inside your own unit will ever find.

  • MDF room access coordinated with building management
  • Correct jumpering for new or relocated services
  • Legacy Krone/MICC block repairs where needed
  • Fault isolation between building-side and unit-side wiring
  • Documentation provided for strata records

Why MDF Faults Get Missed

Standard ISP fault-finding stops at your front door. A technician sent to fix "your" internet fault has no reason to check the building's shared MDF room — so a jumpering error or degraded connection block there can go unresolved indefinitely.

As ACMA registered cablers, we can access and work on the MDF itself — correcting jumpering, replacing damaged connection blocks, and resolving inter-unit cross-talk that's often blamed on the customer's own wiring.

This is particularly common in older apartment blocks with legacy Krone or MICC-style distribution frames that haven't been upgraded since the building was constructed.

Note on access: MDF rooms are shared building infrastructure, so we coordinate access with your building manager or strata committee before any work begins — we can liaise directly on your behalf.

FAQ

MDF Upgrade Questions

What is an MDF and why does it matter for my internet? +
The Main Distribution Frame (MDF) is where your building's internal cabling connects to the external telecommunications network, usually in a shared comms room. Faults or incorrect jumpering here can cause internet and phone problems that have nothing to do with your own unit's wiring.
How do I know if my fault is at the MDF rather than in my unit? +
If an ISP technician has already checked your unit's internal wiring and found nothing wrong, but the fault persists, the MDF is a common next place to check — particularly in apartment buildings. Call us and we can assess this.
Do I need strata approval for MDF work? +
Generally yes, since the MDF room is shared building infrastructure. We can liaise directly with your building manager or strata committee to arrange access on your behalf.
Can you fix cross-talk or interference between units? +
Yes — cross-talk at the MDF, often from legacy Krone or MICC connection blocks, is a common cause of unexplained faults between neighbouring units. We diagnose and correct this at the frame.
Do you work on older apartment buildings with legacy MDF equipment? +
Yes — legacy Krone and MICC-style distribution frames are common in older buildings, and we regularly diagnose and repair faults on this older equipment.
Can you help with a building-wide MDF upgrade for our strata scheme? +
Yes. We work with strata committees to assess and upgrade ageing MDF infrastructure affecting multiple units — call us to discuss your building's situation.
